Story with Ukulele
Jacob Collier is a 5-time Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist based in London, known for his energetic performances and dense, microtonal vocal harmonies. While proficient in piano, bass, and drums, the ukulele often serves as his tool of choice for harmonic exploration due to its voicing capabilities.
He gained initial fame through split-screen YouTube covers where he played every instrument himself. Collier often plays a custom-made 5-string tenor ukulele (High G, C, E, A, and a Low G or D string), expanding the instrument's range. This allows him to perform complex jazz chords and basslines simultaneously.
His massive four-volume project, 'Djesse', features collaborations with orchestras and artists worldwide. Jacob challenges the ukulele's 'simple' reputation by applying advanced music theory, polyrhythms, and just intonation to his playing, proving that four (or five) strings are a limitless canvas for modern musical innovation.
