Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwoʻole

Story with Ukulele

Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwoʻole was more than just a musician; he was a towering figure in Hawaiian culture and a staunch advocate for Hawaiian sovereignty. Born in Honolulu, he formed the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau with his brother Skippy in 1976, blending contemporary and traditional styles that sparked a renaissance in Hawaiian music. His music often addressed social issues, promoting a deep sense of pride in Hawaiian heritage.

His solo career skyrocketed with the 1993 album 'Facing Future', which remains the best-selling album of all time by a Hawaiian artist. The album features his iconic medley of 'Over the Rainbow' and 'What a Wonderful World', recorded in a single spontaneous 3 AM session in 1988. IZ arrived at the studio, and in one seamless take with his Martin tenor ukulele, created a global anthem of hope and peace.

Tragically, IZ passed away at age 38 due to respiratory failure related to his weight. His impact was so profound that his body lay in state at the Hawaii State Capitol building, an honor previously granted to only two others in Hawaiian history. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach as thousands cheered from the shore, a testament to the 'Aloha Spirit' he embodied.

His gentle voice, juxtaposed with his imposing physical presence, and his intricate yet accessible ukulele strumming style continue to inspire players worldwide.
